Visual Art Instructors Instructors
Position Purpose:
The Art Garage Instructor's role is to facilitate a group of students through hands-on exploration of the visual arts using a variety of techniques and materials — meeting each student where they are and guiding them through personal learning and growth.
Ideal instructors have:
A passion for art and community work
A commitment to equity and accessibility in the visual arts
Flexibility and reliability
The ability to collaborate with others
Excellent communication skills
Experience with fine arts, art education, art therapy, special education, early childhood education, and/or adult education
Starting pay $30.00–$32.50/hour
Instructors come from many backgrounds — art education, self-taught artists, ECE teachers, professional practicing artists, and artistic or therapeutic professionals. Instructors often work across several roles at The Art Garage. Below are descriptions of each.

Art Parties
High-energy birthday parties and adult events; part teacher, part party host

Adult Classes
Daytime or evening classes for students 18+ across a variety of media

School Day Out Classes
Three-hour classes for kids ages 3–12 on days when local schools are closed; especially during Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break weeks

Summer Camps
Weeklong classes for kids ages 3–5, 6–8, 9–12, and teens

After School Classes
Weekly classes across a variety of ages, typically in month-long series

Community Engagement Programs
Programming with partnered schools and community organizations. Not an Art Therapy program, but we look for instructors who bring a therapeutic approach: non-judgmental, welcoming, and experienced with diverse populations.
Program Assistants
Position Purpose:
Program Assistants support The Art Garage's success across many fronts — anticipating the needs of students and teachers, keeping the studio running smoothly, and assisting with administrative duties.
Position Description:
Assist teachers in the classroom and ensure general studio maintenance. Work includes prepping materials at the beginning of classes, preparing snacks for students, assisting with classroom clean-up, supporting students during classes, office work, answering phones, leading games or story time during breaks, and cleaning and organizing art supplies and the overall studio (restrooms, sinks, mopping, etc.).
Program Assistants must be willing to work as a team, follow directions, work with customers, and be positive role models for our students. We look for people with an interest in the arts, nonprofit management, or education. Completion of higher education or specialized programs is a plus. This is a part-time, year-round position. Seasonal full-time positions are available during summer months.

Lead Instructor
Position Purpose
The Lead Instructor facilitates engaging visual art classes that align with our mission while actively supporting, mentoring, and training our part-time teaching staff. This role balances direct studio instruction with administrative support and instructor mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Community Engagement
Teach Visual Arts: Prep and facilitate high-quality visual art classes across a variety of mediums and for a wide range of age groups.
Community Projects: Plan, prepare, and facilitate community art projects for special events.
Instructor Mentorship & Support
Collaborate closely with the Director of Education to onboard and elevate our teaching staff:
Onboarding: Assist with new teacher welcome initiatives and orientation support.
Curriculum Review: Review and provide feedback on new instructor' lesson plans.
In-Class Support: Assist new instructors during their classes both on-site and off-site.
Evaluation & Growth: Complete teacher observation rubrics and debrief with instructors following their lessons.
Quality Assurance: Schedule additional observation classes when needed and escalate immediate instructor concerns to the Director of Education.
Studio & Admin Support
Assist with day-to-day administrative tasks and studio maintenance duties as needed.
